Two North Korean soldiers deployed in the Ukraine-Russia war claimed they believed they were participating in a military exercise, not a war, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service reported on Sunday.

The two captured soldiers, identified as a rifleman and a sniper, aged 20 and 26, respectively, have been transported to Kyiv for further investigation and medical treatment. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed the soldiers’ capture in a statement shared Saturday in English, Ukrainian and Korean on social platform X.

Zelensky, in particular, referred to the North Korean detainees as “prisoners of war” in the statement, suggesting that Ukraine may seek to leverage them in a potential prisoner exchange with Russia.

The statement marks the first time Ukrainian authorities have officially announced the capture and identification of North Korean soldiers deployed to support Russia in the war.

Previously, Ukrainian media reported one North Korean soldier had been captured in the same Kursk region by Ukrainian military forces in December. The soldier was later confirmed by the NIS to have died from severe injuries.
